Great question! Video ads must be approved by Hulu before being able to run - and Hulu has a higher standard than most video advertising channels. Video ads must be between 15-30s in length, .mp4 or .mov format, 1920p (preferred) or 1280 (accepted) quality, 16:9 video aspect ratio, and 8 or 16 bit and 15 MB/s (minimum) bit rate.

Hulu allows you to target based on a variety of different settings: location, gender, age, audience, platform, and content genre. You can also dive into specific audience targeting settings such as interests (purchase behaviors), demographics (careers & education types), interests (entertainment, food & drink, etc.) and ownership (cars, homes, pets). There’s no shortage of variables you’re able to test - though we do recommend generally tying in just a few that can be the most impactful. Don’t worry, we’ll help guide you here.

In general, there are a few best practices we like to consider: (a) hook your viewers within the first 3-5 seconds, (b) use clear messing and add text on the screen to reinforce it, and (c) add in your company logo or branding. So long as you can keep these three things in mind, and make your video be 15-30 seconds in length (and formatted correctly), you’ll be well on your way to a strong-performing Hulu ad.

While many other digital platforms will focus on clicks and conversions, Hulu is unique in the sense that it is mostly related to increasing brand awareness. For that reason, we lean on metrics like impressions and reach (especially across specific geos or demographics) and completion rate to gauge how successful a Hulu ad campaign is.
