Welcome Brett Nephew – AdShark’s New Digital Creative!

As the digital marketing industry continues to shift towards short-form video, we were beyond excited to come across Brett Nephew – a self-trained director and editor who is going to do big things at AdShark!

Brett joined the team on April 1st, and is now a whopping 17 days into his new career at AdShark. In typical AdShark fashion, we wanted to announce our new hire to the rest of the world in the only way we know how to do so: by making him fill out a questionnaire and blasting him on our socials!

Ready to meet our newest Shark? Let’s dive in!

Welcome to AdShark! As you settle into your third week at our company, what has been the biggest surprise to you so far?

Pumped to be here! My answer is cliche, but that stands to show how true it is- the biggest surprise so far is just how welcoming and friendly the entire staff has been! I already feel like a part of the team, and I’m excited to contribute in any which way I can.

You have one sentence to describe yourself… GO!

Just a real rad dude with an impeccable taste in Film & Music (Case Studied) who loves his camera, caffeine, and his orange cat George.

Cool! Now let’s see what you can tell us with a few more sentences. Tell us a little bit more about you.

Hi! I’m Brett, I’m from Detroit Lakes, MN, where I was fortunate enough to come up with lake access, a great community, and a loving family. I grew up playing sports, which developed my competitive nature, animated personality, and collaborative spirit. I love to study film and cinematography, play 3rd person RPGs, and spend time with my friends and partner, Margarita.

Brett, you’ve been directing and editing videos for years now. Tell us: what is your favorite type of video to shoot, or your favorite moment to capture?!

I’d have to say it’s tough to beat the feeling of capturing big moments in sporting events. There is a lot of pressure as typically you don’t get a second opportunity to capture a game winning goal or last second TD- but when you find yourself in the right place at the right time, it’s a pretty surreal experience.

As a Digital Creative, you’ll be helping our clients’ ads get seen by the masses. What is the most exciting part, in your opinion, of working in advertising?

For me, the most exciting part has to be seeing the direct impact our work has on our clients’ business. It’s cool enough to have the opportunity to create,  but also knowing that conceptualizing, researching, and shooting these ads can have a genuine impact for our clients growth,  is a pretty cool position to be in.

If you could travel to any place in the world for a week, where would you choose to go?

New Zealand to hang out with the Hobbits. For Frodo!

Which national brand do you think KILLS it with their marketing or design?

Alphalete– They are a gym/lifestyle clothing brand, and are a great example of a company that knows their target audience and market. Purposeful, engaging and creative video ads, a wide variety of set design and themes, excellent brand messaging- and above all, they are consistent.

If you could travel back in time and give 18-year-old Brett any piece of advice, what would it be?

I don’t necessarily believe in the idea of changing the past, so instead of telling 18-year-old Brett to do this, that, and the other thing, I’d just tell him it’s okay to stumble, to fall off… to have bad days, bad weeks, even years. But as long as you keep picking yourself up, keep your chin high, and keep pushing forward, you’re going to come out on top.

Your friend asks you to start a book club, but you convince them instead to do a music club. What are the first 3 albums that you make everybody in the group listen to?!

Unbelievable question, Jacksun. The albums in question would be: Damn. by Kendrick Lamar, Swimming by the late Mac Miller, and Traveller by Chris Stapleton. Why? Well you’ll have to come to my music club.

If you were forced to start a podcast, what would your podcast be about and WHO would be your first guest on the pod?!

My podcast would be centered around entertainment such as Film & Video Games- reviews, news, and discussions about the latest releases. First guest would be Lead Director of Developer CD Projekt Red, Pawel Sasko.

And, of course, what’s your favorite type of shark?

Great White!
